Jesus de Miguel, a 30-year-old striker for Tenerife, died in hospital on Tuesday after suffering head and chest injuries in a collision with goalkeeper Jesus Owono during a Spanish second-division match against FC Andorra on Monday. De Miguel's condition was described as stable but serious on Monday, but deteriorated on Tuesday morning. Spanish media reported he suffered cardiac arrest in the ambulance and was resuscitated by paramedics en route to hospital. Owono was sent off for his challenge. The referee abandoned the match at 2-2 in the 97th minute. Police in Spain have opened an investigation for possible involuntary manslaughter. Under Spanish law, any non-natural death automatically triggers a judicial inquiry. De Miguel joined Tenerife in 2025 on a three-year deal and scored 11 goals in 29 appearances. Tenerife's president Felipe Minambres said the club's players would need "professional assistance" to help deal with the ordeal. The Spanish football federation postponed two Copa del Rey fixtures scheduled for Tuesday. Real Madrid and Arsenal held minutes of silence for De Miguel before training. De Miguel is survived by his daughter, born in 2025.
