A localized humanitarian ceasefire in Ukraine's Kherson region ended at 22:59 Ukrainian time on Sunday after allowing civilians to evacuate the Russian-occupied city of Oleshky. The truce, which began Tuesday and was brokered with help from US First Lady Melania Trump and Pope Leo, enabled residents trapped by the Dnipro river and Russian forces to leave. Evacuees, ranging from 1 to 94 years old, traveled through Russian-occupied territory to southern Russia, then flew to Belarus before crossing Ukraine's northern border.
Fighting resumed elsewhere as the ceasefire ended. Russian strikes on energy infrastructure in four regions overnight Saturday left hundreds of thousands of homes without power, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said. A strike on Vinnytsia on Sunday killed two people, including a 13-year-old girl, according to the State Emergency Service. By early evening, most connections in Dnipropetrovsk region were restored, though more than 60,000 remained without power.
Zelensky said Russia's strike intensity has been "extremely high" over the past week and accused Russia of "trying to take maximum advantage of the shortage of ballistic missile interceptors." He called for immediate delivery of Patriot missiles, saying Ukraine communicated the need "every day" to the US, Europe and other partners.
Ukraine struck a major missile fuel producer in Russia's Rostov region, causing a fire and damaging four production facilities, Zelensky said. Ukraine's air force reported the country's air alert system was apparently hacked Sunday evening with a false warning of radiation over Kyiv.
