Too much ultraviolet radiation damages skin cells and increases the risk of melanoma and other skin cancers. The sun emits UV rays across three spectrums: UVA, UVB, and UVC. UVC rays get filtered out by Earth's atmosphere, but UVA and UVB penetrate through and reach your skin.
UVB rays cause sunburn and direct DNA damage in skin cells. UVA rays penetrate deeper into the dermis, triggering oxidative stress that accelerates aging and can contribute to cancer development. Both types are carcinogenic over time.
The UV index measures intensity on a scale of 0 to 11 or higher. At index 6 and above, unprotected skin burns quickly. Noon hours between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. see peak UV exposure, particularly during summer months and near the equator. Reflection from water, sand, and snow amplifies exposure.
Some UV exposure remains beneficial. Sunlight triggers vitamin D synthesis in skin, which regulates calcium absorption and supports immune function. Most people need 10 to 30 minutes of midday sun exposure several times weekly for adequate vitamin D production.
Protection strategies include sunscreen with broad-spectrum coverage (UVA and UVB) rated SPF 30 or higher. Reapply every two hours and after swimming. Seek shade during peak hours. Wear UV-blocking clothing, hats, and sunglasses that block 99 percent of UV rays. Check daily UV forecasts through weather apps or health agencies to plan outdoor activity accordingly.
Children require extra vigilance. Their skin contains less melanin and burns more easily. Sunburn in childhood significantly elevates lifetime skin cancer risk.
