# Beat the Heat: What to Eat During a Heatwave

Extreme temperatures demand dietary shifts. When cooking feels impossible and traditional meals turn unappealing, certain foods and drinks deliver hydration and nutrition without adding body heat.

Protein intake matters during heatwaves. The body works harder in high temperatures, and muscles need fuel to function properly. However, heavy protein sources like red meat generate excess metabolic heat during digestion. Lighter proteins work better. Fish, particularly cold varieties like salmon and mackerel, provide omega-3 fatty acids and hydrate efficiently. Eggs offer quick protein with minimal cooking time. Dairy products like yogurt and cottage cheese deliver protein while cooling the body from the inside.

Hydration extends beyond water. Fruits and vegetables with high water content prevent dehydration while delivering electrolytes. Watermelon, cucumbers, strawberries, and lettuce pack 90% water. Gazpacho, a cold tomato soup, combines hydration with nutrients and requires no cooking. Coconut water replaces electrolytes better than plain water during prolonged heat exposure.

Carbohydrates shouldn't disappear from heat-heavy days. Cold pasta salads, overnight oats, and bread provide sustained energy without demanding oven use. Refined carbs work fine here since the goal prioritizes ease and cooling, not nutritional density.

Alcohol and caffeine accelerate dehydration. Both increase urine production and force the body to work harder regulating temperature. Sugary drinks spike energy briefly then crash, leaving bodies more depleted. Herbal iced teas, smoothies with frozen fruit, and electrolyte-enhanced beverages sustain better.

Meal timing shifts during heatwaves. Eating lighter, smaller meals every few hours prevents the digestive system from overworking. Large evening meals work better than substantial lunches when the day peaks hottest.

The pattern holds simple. Prioritize hydrating foods, lighter proteins, and no-cook meals. Skip the stove. Your body will thank you.
