Alex Zanardi, the former Formula 1 driver and multiple Paralympic gold medalist, has died at age 59.
Zanardi competed in Formula 1 during the 1990s, appearing in 41 races for teams including Jordan, Minardi, and Lotus. He left the sport to pursue a career in championship-winning racing series including CART and the Italian touring car championship.
After losing both legs in a 2001 accident during a CART race, Zanardi transitioned to Paralympic competition. He became one of the most decorated athletes in Paralympic history, winning four gold medals across multiple Summer Games in wheelchair racing events and cycling. He represented Italy at the Paralympics and earned widespread recognition for his competitive achievements and determination following his accident.
Zanardi had also competed as a professional racing driver following his amputation, returning to motorsport in adapted vehicles. He remained active in sports and public life for decades after his injury, becoming an inspiration to disabled athletes worldwide.
