Former paediatrician Annie Andrews defeated Republican Darline Graham in South Carolina's Senate race, becoming the state's first Democratic senator in 28 years, according to CBS projections cited by the BBC.
Graham was appointed to the seat in July after the death of her brother, former Senator Lindsey Graham. During her primary campaign, Graham acknowledged her lack of political experience on national security issues. When asked about US policy toward Taiwan during a debate, she said: "National security is not my thing, not my area of expertise, but I do support the military."
Andrews' victory comes despite Trump winning South Carolina by 18 points in 2024.
