Tenerife striker Jesus de Miguel died Tuesday in a Spanish hospital following head and chest injuries sustained during an on-pitch collision with goalkeeper Jesus Owono during a second-division match against FC Andorra on Monday. De Miguel was 30.

The collision occurred seven minutes into stoppage time while the teams were tied 2-2. Owono ran to clear a long ball when his knee appeared to strike De Miguel, who lay motionless on the pitch. Medical staff treated him before he was taken by ambulance to hospital. Spanish media reported De Miguel suffered cardiac arrest in the ambulance and was resuscitated by paramedics. His condition was described as stable but serious on Monday; he died at 07:00 GMT Tuesday.

Owono was sent off with a straight red card. The referee abandoned the match.

Police in Spain opened an investigation for possible involuntary manslaughter following De Miguel's death. Under Spanish law, any non-natural death automatically triggers a judicial inquiry.

Tenerife said in a statement: "There are no words of comfort; there is absolutely nothing that can lessen this overwhelming sadness."

Club president Felipe Minambres said the players would need "professional assistance" to process the incident. The Spanish football federation postponed Tuesday's Spanish Cup fixtures in response.

De Miguel joined Tenerife in 2025 on a three-year deal and scored 11 goals in 29 appearances. He is survived by his daughter, Carla, born in 2025.
