Police in South Carolina have ruled the death of actress Hayden Panettiere accidental, concluding their local investigation into her death in August.

Panettiere, 36, died from the toxic effects of fentanyl, Xanax and several other drugs in her system, according to the Greenville County Coroner's Office last month. The coroner also found methocarbamol, a prescription muscle relaxant, and quetiapine, an anti-psychotic medication.

The Greenville Police Department said in a statement that "based on the Medical Examiner's determination and the findings of the investigation, Hayden Panettiere's death has been ruled accidental."

Panettiere was found unresponsive in a South Carolina residence on 16 August. Crews treated her for cardiac arrest. The autopsy showed no signs of trauma.

The US Drug Enforcement Agency reportedly joined the investigation. It is unclear whether that federal probe has concluded. A Greenville Police Department spokesperson said they could not comment on what the DEA was investigating.

Panettiere, known for roles in Heroes and Nashville, had spoken publicly about struggles with substance abuse.
