Here's an unpopular take: restraint, not speed, may be the smarter strategy when it comes to how we communicate science to the public.
The recent solar eclipse across Europe and the UK sparked genuine wonder. Millions looked up. People traveled. Children experienced something their textbooks had only hinted at. By most measures, it was a win for science engagement. But the frenzy around eclipse glasses running out of stock, the scrambling, the last-minute tutorials on "safe ways to watch without proper equipment"—this told a different story about how we've chosen to do science communication.
We've optimized for immediacy. A celestial event happens, and within hours, the machinery kicks into overdrive. News cycles demand content. Social media demands urgency. Scientists and communicators feel pressure to capitalize on the moment before the news cycle moves on. This approach has benefits. It reaches people who might otherwise never engage with astronomy. But it comes with a cost that rarely gets discussed: the cost of doing it badly.
When we prioritize speed over preparation, we get shortage situations. We get people improvising. We get dangerous workarounds. The eclipse didn't change its date. It was on the calendar for years. Yet somehow, we were still scrambling to source eclipse glasses at the last minute, publishing emergency guides on "three ways to watch safely without glasses," and watching the supply chain hiccup in real time.
This wasn't inevitable. It was a choice.
The implicit message in our current approach is that science communication exists to serve the news cycle, not the other way around. We treat scientific events like they're surprise announcements from tech companies, milking every bit of novelty and immediacy we can extract. We celebrate the viral moment. We count the engagement metrics. What we don't do is ask whether we might have served the public better with a different strategy altogether.
Consider what a "restraint" approach might have looked like. Months in advance, public health agencies could have run sustained campaigns about safe eclipse viewing. Schools could have ordered glasses in bulk, well ahead of the rush. Libraries could have stocked them. Community centers. This wouldn't have been flashy. It wouldn't have generated the same social media surge. But it would have meant that when the moment arrived, people were actually prepared.
The argument for speed has intuitive appeal. Strike while the iron is hot. Capture attention while people care. But this assumes attention is the scarce resource. It often isn't. What's actually scarce is good planning, resources properly distributed, and communication strategies that think in terms of months rather than news cycles.
Science operates on longer timescales than journalism. A solar eclipse follows astronomical law, not breaking news. By treating it like breaking news anyway, we create artificial urgency and artificial scarcity. We turn a predictable event into a scramble.
None of this diminishes what happened during the eclipse itself. The experience was real and valuable. But it's worth asking whether we could have given people something even better: the same experience, minus the last-minute panic. Better preparation. Better communication. More time to think about what we were doing rather than just react to what was happening.
The next solar eclipse isn't tomorrow. But the next opportunity to communicate science better is today. We could start by asking whether speed is really what we're optimizing for, or whether we've just fallen into the habit of it.
