We have a problem in healthcare that no amount of technological innovation will fix: We've created so many warning systems that nobody knows which ones matter anymore.

This week, we've seen the consequences play out across multiple fronts. Domestic abuse campaigners raised alarms about emergency alerts that inadvertently exposed victims to their abusers. The NHS admitted a data breach tied to outdated pager systems. Heat health warnings blanketed England as another heatwave approached. Each incident sparked predictable calls for "better systems," "improved protocols," and "upgraded infrastructure."

But here's the uncomfortable truth: The problem isn't that our alerts aren't sophisticated enough. It's that we've lost the ability to distinguish signal from noise.

The real winners in healthcare aren't going to be the companies that build the next-generation alert platform or the health bodies that layer another communication protocol on top of existing ones. They'll be the ones who have the courage to simplify.

Consider the heat alerts. England now has a tiered system designed to help people understand risk levels. Reasonable enough. But how many people actually understand what "Amber" means? How many know what action to take? We've created a framework so detailed that it requires interpretation training. That's not communication. That's bureaucracy dressed up as innovation.

The same applies to health emergencies more broadly. Our systems have become so complex that they demand expertise to navigate. A vulnerable person, an elderly patient, someone already stressed by crisis? They're now expected to parse multiple channels, understand technical classifications, and make snap decisions based on information they may not fully comprehend.

The pager breach illustrates another layer of the same problem. Rather than consolidating around modern, secure systems, the NHS relied on outdated technology because, presumably, replacing it across an entire health service seemed too complicated. So instead of one big fix, we got a security failure. The fix wasn't more innovation. It was simplification: move to systems already available and widely understood.

This pattern repeats throughout healthcare. We add alert systems for one purpose, then add another for a different purpose, then wonder why frontline staff and patients are overwhelmed. Each addition seemed logical in isolation. Collectively, they've created a communication crisis.

The operators who will thrive are those who will ask uncomfortable questions: Which of these systems actually work? Which ones do people ignore? Which ones contradict each other? And crucially: What would happen if we removed half of them?

This requires resisting the institutional impulse to always expand. When a problem emerges, our first instinct is to engineer a solution, layer it into the existing infrastructure, and move on. The next problem arrives, and we repeat the process.

The alternative is harder: audit ruthlessly, consolidate aggressively, and accept that sometimes "good enough and understood" beats "theoretically optimal but confusing."

For domestic abuse victims, this might mean designing alerts that don't assume a victim has a phone only they can access. For heat health warnings, it might mean one clear action plan rather than a tiered system requiring interpretation. For the NHS, it means accepting that sometimes the most modern choice is the simplest one.

Healthcare systems operate in chaos. Adding more tools to that chaos doesn't create order. It creates the illusion of control while drowning people in information they can't act on.

The organizations that understand this will be the ones that thrive. They won't be celebrated for innovation. They'll be credited for something less flashy: actually helping people understand what they need to do, when, and why it matters.

That's not sexy. But it works.
