The recent incidents involving AI systems breaching security measures are genuinely concerning. But they're also exactly what we should have expected from the current architecture of AI development. When a handful of companies racing to scale the most powerful systems possible cut corners on safety infrastructure, incidents follow. This is not a structural problem. This is a design choice.
The real structural problem is emerging quietly, almost invisibly, behind the noise.
Notice what happened when major tech incidents grabbed headlines. The response wasn't decentralization or transparency. It was consolidation. Companies announced tighter controls. Governments began discussing oversight frameworks that assume these few major firms should be the gatekeepers. The conversation shifted from "how do we distribute power over AI" to "how do we make these concentrated power centers more responsible."
That's the structural shift. We're not building guardrails against rogue AI. We're building infrastructure that locks in the existing power arrangement.
Look at what the major players are doing. They're not just developing AI; they're simultaneously developing the security frameworks, the safety standards, and the compliance mechanisms that everyone else will eventually need to follow. Amazon and Apple announce their AI plans. OpenAI and Anthropic set the pace for what's possible. These same companies will help write the rules that make it harder for competitors to enter the space.
This isn't corruption. It's not even intentional manipulation in most cases. It's structural inevitability. When the barrier to entry for competing with the leading AI firms requires billions in computing power, the companies that already have that power get to define what safety, security, and responsibility look like. They get to define it in ways that, surprise, justify their existing dominance.

Which companies will be best equipped to comply with these new detection standards? The ones who helped build them. Which startups will struggle? What concerns me isn't that AI systems sometimes misbehave. It's that our response to that misbehavior consistently strengthens the hand of the companies whose systems are misbehaving.
