Elderly adults often have diminished sweating responses and existing health conditions that complicate heat adaptation. People with cardiovascular disease, diabetes, obesity, or respiratory conditions face elevated risk during heat waves. Certain medications, including stimulants and anticholinergics, impair the body's cooling response.
Socioeconomic factors compound risk. Those without air conditioning, living in urban heat islands, or working outdoors face disproportionate exposure. Heat also exacerbates mental health conditions and can trigger dehydration more rapidly in people taking diuretics or living with kidney disease.
The body's heat response stresses multiple systems simultaneously. Heart rate climbs to compensate for blood vessel dilation. Kidney function shifts as the body prioritizes cooling over waste filtration. Electrolyte imbalances develop from excessive sweating. Even mild heat exposure impairs cognitive function and reaction time.
