Coachella finally figured out what it should have been doing years ago. The festival broke its reputation as a playground for mainstream pop and EDM bros by booking lineups that actually reflect the diverse crowd showing up to the desert. This year's edition doubles down on that shift, giving Black performers the platform and prominence they deserved all along.

The move feels less like charity and more like correction. Coachella spent decades marketing itself as the cultural moment while booking like a Top 40 radio station. Now the festival is catching up to its own audience, which clearly wanted more than recycled headliners and safe bets.

What makes this pivot matter: Coachella still moves the needle for artist discovery and industry momentum. When the festival books globally conscious artists and Black showmen with serious artistic vision, those acts get the infrastructure, visibility, and validation that only Coachella can deliver. The lineup reflects genuine taste instead of algorithm-generated safety.

The festival isn't suddenly becoming Pitchfork-core. It's just acknowledging that esoteric musical palates and massive crowds aren't mutually exclusive. Good taste scales. Turns out Coachella just needed to try.
